Once you have found the right locker, it’s time to think about the accessories that you will need as well. There are many details that are important to consider when choosing the right locker accessories.

Choosing Locker Accessories
The choices for locker accessories include:

  • Slope Hood – This should be 16 gauge and bolted together, not spliced. It should also be screwed to the locker and not clipped because clips can come loose over time and eventually fall off.
  • Recess Top and Side Trim – These should be 18 gauge and also attached with screws, not clips.
  • Front Fillers – This should be 16 gauge and attached with screws.  Also, Front Fillers should be no wider that 11 7/8” as anything larger, a dummy door should be used for strength.
  • Z Base – This should be no less than 12 gauge. For example, if you used a 16 gauge Z Base, it will collapse over time especially with 14 gauge doors.
  • End Panels – Boxed End Panels that are usually 16 gauge is a good choice. Just know that although nice, they are expensive and tend to come loose over time.
  • End Cover Panels – Gauge steel and perimeter punched are not as dressy but more durable, so it’s recommended as a good option.
  • Continuous Hinges –  This is a necessity especially on double tier and other multiple tier lockers.
  • Louvers – Preferably use standard louvers in a corridor as it dresses up the locker and you don’t get that solid metal look.  It’s like wearing a tie versus no tie, but other than that it’s an individual decision. In a locker room, use “full” mini louvers as it will allow a good flow of air without losing any strength by eliminating steel. Also you cannot see into the lockers so theft is less of a concern.
  • Locks – Built in locks are always a good selection, except if it’s a team locker as they are usually changed three times a year. When padlocks are used, many students forget to lock it and the lock disappears. There is also no reason to change the combination since a student can use the locker for four years.

In summary, picking locker accessories may be “picky” as there are a lot of details that needs to be taken into consideration. However, once you know what to look for, the choices become easier.
